7. The Puppeteer: The Black Flag

Year: 2013
Character: The Puppeteer
Source: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer
Materials: cotton voile, acrylic paint, fabric medium, sandpaper

I needed a prop for The Puppeteer because chances were, people weren't going to recognise the character at cons.

I scaled and printed off the logo and cut it out the main A section, leaving a template and painted a rough outline. I placed the printout of the skull underneath the fabric and painted over it.

I didn't want to be too perfect with filling in the logo as I like the texture of it. Once it was dry and I had heat-set it with an iron, I hacked at it with a box cutter and sandpaper to really roughen it up.

Arrrrr!

The carved MDF pieces

Woodworking: another first! I told you The Puppeteer was technically challenging for me.

I carved out the daggers from MDF with a dremel and sculpted the handle details with apoxy sculpt. It looks so rough and awful because I was in a rush. I actually lost the ankle dagger (the small one) at Armageddon 2013 somewhere.

Version #2

The hilt of the ankle dagger was eventually wrapped in a strip of red pleather.

Look at how much nicer they are! Still just MDF and apoxy sculpt.

I discovered that we had a belt sander in the shed that belonged to my brother in his uni days so I made dad drag it out and set it up. I used the belt sander to carve away the bulk of it and hand sanded them with a fine grit. I was able to take more time and attention with these versions.

I think I primed it with black primer from Rustoleum and used silver Rub n Buff. Sealed with a clear coat.

I can't remember which version it happened to, but the jewel broke off at a con because I dropped it one too many times. It was only attached with apoxy sculpt which meant it was incredibly fragile. It might've been the 2nd version because I remember adding a little screw into the end and attached the jewel/apoxy around that for (hopefully) added security, and I was meant to touch up the paint which I haven't done... yet...
