Mulan - Comb

Year: 2008
Source: Disney's "Mulan" (1998)
Materials: Pat-a-Clay, plastic comb, barette

Pat-a-Clay is a special air-dry modelling clay used for Thai clay flowers. When dry, it's still a little flexible. Oil paints were mixed into the clay before being rolled out with a pasta maker between sheets of plastic. I cut out the petals with a scalpel. The clay pieces were superglued to the comb.

I would like to re-make this at some point as it's gotten a little worse for wear over the years.

Ubisoft E3 Fan Video Contest

Year: 2013/2014
Source: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer
Conventions attended: Armageddon 2013, EB Expo 2013, Supanova 2014
Awards: Placed 2-5th in Ubisoft's E3 Fan Video Contest - Cosplay Category 2014

With the help of Dean Musumeci, we filmed a short showcase video in the Ferntree Gully region in Victoria, AU to enter into Ubisoft's E3 Fan Video Contest 2014. I thought the location looked similar to one of the multiplayer maps.

UPDATE: I placed 2-5th in the Cosplay Category!

As you can probably tell, acting is not a strong point for me and we tried to keep the focus on showing off the costume rather than creating a story. Although there is a little bit of story of the Puppeteer in search of the Blood Vial. It was a very last minute project and I just finished work earlier that day so we didn't really have much time to muck about.

7. The Puppeteer: The Black Flag

Year: 2013
Character: The Puppeteer
Source: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer
Materials: cotton voile, acrylic paint, fabric medium, sandpaper

I needed a prop for The Puppeteer because chances were, people weren't going to recognise the character at cons.

I scaled and printed off the logo and cut it out the main A section, leaving a template and painted a rough outline. I placed the printout of the skull underneath the fabric and painted over it.

I didn't want to be too perfect with filling in the logo as I like the texture of it. Once it was dry and I had heat-set it with an iron, I hacked at it with a box cutter and sandpaper to really roughen it up.

Arrrrr!

6. The Puppeteer: Daggers

Year: 2013/2014
Source: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag multiplayer
Conventions attended: Armageddon 2013, EB Expo 2013, Supanova (Melbourne & Sydney) 2014
Awards: Placed 2-5th in Ubisoft's E3 Fan Video Contest - Cosplay Category 2014

Version #1

Materials; MDF, Apoxy Sculpt, glass bead, chrome spray paint

The carved MDF pieces

Woodworking: another first! I told you The Puppeteer was technically challenging for me.

I carved out the daggers from MDF with a dremel and sculpted the handle details with apoxy sculpt. It looks so rough and awful because I was in a rush. I actually lost the ankle dagger (the small one) at Armageddon 2013 somewhere.

--------------------------

Version #2

The hilt of the ankle dagger was eventually wrapped in a strip of red pleather.

Look at how much nicer they are! Still just MDF and apoxy sculpt.

I discovered that we had a belt sander in the shed that belonged to my brother in his uni days so I made dad drag it out and set it up. I used the belt sander to carve away the bulk of it and hand sanded them with a fine grit. I was able to take more time and attention with these versions.

I think I primed it with black primer from Rustoleum and used silver Rub n Buff. Sealed with a clear coat.

I can't remember which version it happened to, but the jewel broke off at a con because I dropped it one too many times. It was only attached with apoxy sculpt which meant it was incredibly fragile. It might've been the 2nd version because I remember adding a little screw into the end and attached the jewel/apoxy around that for (hopefully) added security, and I was meant to touch up the paint which I haven't done... yet...
